Ikea Will Introduce Vegan Swedish Meatballs In April

Ikea, the Swedish furniture brand with a much better food selection than one generally expects from, say, a furniture store, has acquiesced to pleas and demands from vegan consumers, and will debut vegan Swedish meatballs as of April 2015, PETA has confirmed.

The news follows the announcement from Ikea just a few months ago that the company was working on vegetarian meatballs, which subsequently inspired animal rights groups including PETA and Viva! to call for a completely vegan option.

"Ikea wants to offer healthy food choices that are delicious, sustainable, and affordable for the many people, based on the Ikea Swedish identity, the company's global sustainability and health manager confirmed to Viva! "Ikea Food is currently developing the food range to provide options that meet the many different preferences of our customers. One of the exciting new products is a veggie ball, which will be launched in our stores from April and onwards. The veggie ball does not have any animal content and is therefore also suitable for vegans."

Beginning in April, the vegan meatballs will be available in store restaurants and will available for sale in the frozen section at a later date.
