Get Excited: Chipotle Is Testing Out Chorizo Burritos

Chipotle addicts, rejoice: A new menu item is coming that will make your burrito decision even more difficult. Chipotle is allegedly testing out chorizo in Kansas City, according to the Kansas City Star. The new menu item is described as "Mexican-style fresh sausage — a blend of ground chicken and pork with paprika, cumin, garlic, and red wine." Kansas City Chipotle fans can add chorizo as to their burrito, burrito bowl, salad, or taco for $6.95.

"Kansas City is probably a really good barometer of how people will respond to the chorizo anywhere," says Chris Arnold, Chipotle's Denver-based communications director.

This is the first new protein option Chipotle has added since introducing the vegan option sofritas nationwide last year. According to Chipotle corporate chef Nate Appleman, chorizo has been in the works for about six years now, and he has been "chomping at the bit" to add it to menus.

But what about Chipotle's pork shortage? We all know that Chipotle's pork carnitas are scarce these days because the company's original major pork distributor did not meet their ethical standards, but their chorizo contains both chicken and pork.

The Daily Meal has reached out to Chipotle for comment, but has not yet received a response.
