Thousands of Prosecco Bottles Have Been Recalled for ‘Spontaneous Shattering’
More than 15,000 bottles of Italian prosecco are being recalled by the London-based Wine Society after reports of “spontaneous shattering.” As scary as that sounds, it’s a reality for several Italian sparkling wine fans.As a result of several complaints of prosecco shattering in members’ wine racks, The Wine Society, the world’s oldest wine club, has recalled 15,000 bottles of Prosecco Brut I Duecento for safety purposes.
“Whilst the incidence of shattering bottles is limited, as a precaution we have also taken the decision to recall all remaining bottles of this wine,” the Wine Society told its members by letter, email, and in a notice on its website.
The shattered wine bottles have not caused any injuries. But the recall comes after the distressing news that the world may soon experience a prosecco shortage due to a poor harvest last year. Despite this, sales of the Italian sparkling wine have rocketed, possibly thanks to the fact that it is often perceived as a lower-priced alternative to Champagne.
