Artificial Intelligence Has Reached A Beery Frontier

A new company is starting to brew beer using artificial intelligence and an algorithm that accounts for customer feedback

Soon taps like these will contain robot-made beer.

Artificial Intelligence continues to reach new frontiers. It seems that nearly every month, there is a new wonder of modern artificial intelligence. it can win jeopardy, defeat chess grandmasters, and diagnose medical conditions.

It’s also made big waves in the food industry by counting calories, acting as chef, and creating new recipes. However, one company is trying to bring the technology to one of the most ancient practices of humans: the consumption of alcohol.

IntelligentX, a London-based company, has taught a robot to brew beer using an algorithm. Consumers can log onto Facebook and share their opinions of the beer with the company’s chatbot. The robot then takes that feedback and begins to make tweaks to the beer. It also uses a decision-making process to discern whether the tweaks were successful.

Co-founder Hew Leith outlined the end product: “We’re using AI to give our brewer superhuman skills, enabling them to test and receive feedback on our beer more quickly than ever before.”

The result could be extraordinary: a beer that continues to improve and refine its palette to satisfy the desires of its customer. However, it seems like a few bad reviews could lead the beer astray; artificial intelligence has laughably failed before, even in the food industry.

However it turns out, the experiment should be fun to watch — especially perched on your favorite barstool.
