Another new Southeast Portland brewery – One Nation Brewing is hoping to make it big in 2015 with a production brewery and tasting room. Two friends and homebrewers Scott Petersen and Dennis (DJ) Moxley plan to open a 10bbl brewhouse just a few blocks from APEX and The Beermongers at 1001 SE Division.
Scott Petersen is a veteran of the design industry and owns local company Think Fiction. Dennis (DJ) Moxley is a young brewer, at 24, who interned with Scott at Think Fiction and has been homebrewing for the last 5 years from his dorm room at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington to brewing a house beer to have on tap at the Think Fiction offices. Like many homebrewers DJ was encouraged by friends and family and then fellow employees at Think Fiction and Scott Petersen and he decided to become serious about entering the local craft beer community.
The name One Nation Brewing atleast by name is the very hippy concept that what unites us together is stronger than anything that divides us. Dennis (DJ) Moxley says “people have a tendency to create walls rather than welcome diversity. One Nation was born on the occasion that we should.” Reminds me a bit of rastafarian culture and makes me pine for the glory days of Roots Organic Brewing which was quite close to where One Nation is going to be located.
Their story is not unlike many new craft brewers making the jump from homebrewing to pro but One Nation Brewing may have the startup capital to outdo most of them, and a prime location. Their 1001 SE Division space was previously the home of Squires Electric and will now place One Nation just a few blocks from Baerlic Brewing and The Commons Brewery (until they move.) The 6,700 square foot space is more than enough for the 10bbl production brewery that One Nation plans to put in and will allow them a tasting room for both their own beers but also guest taps from other brewers that do not have the benefit of a tasting room (may I suggest the upcoming Drinking Horse Brewing?)
The 10bbl brewery is a 3 vessel brewhouse with two 20 BBL brights and two 20 BBL fermenters that will be delivered in February. One Nation already plans on an expansion adding 40bbl brite tanks and fermenters by mid-summer of 2015. With that amount of well planned production and a plan to use a mobile canning service you could see them signing with a distributor rather than running around town themselves. However DJ tells me “We plan to self-distribute as long as possible. We’ve got a few bars, restaurants, and taprooms lined up (Caps n Taps in Camas has been a huge help in getting started).” That’s probably going to be a huge challenge without help unless the tasting room does gangbusters business which I suppose is possible in that great location but the beer will have to be great and the space inviting.
One Nation Brewing does have a year-round beer lineup already sketched out unlike a lot of other startups. They plan a Brown Ale, Scotch Ale, Grapefruit IPA, Peach Wheat and Irish Stout out of the gate with seasonals like Saisons, Kolsch and barrel-aged beers. Count some of the west coasts best farmhouse/sour breweries among their influences says DJ, “Right now I am really into The Commons, Cascade, Funkwerks… I can’t get enough sour and funky beer. We’re both really into Ballast Point right now as well.”
One Nation Brewing is planning to open in March of 2015.
