Tips

  • Children's art workshop. Great way to spend an hour with kids. My 11y and 3y olds lived it
  • The gallery houses 14,000 works, but the most famous is Caravaggios 17th century Taking Of Christ. It was discovered in a Dublin Jesuit house in 1993 where it was thought to be copy.
  • The National Gallery of Ireland houses the national collection of Irish art and European master paintings. FREE admission
  • The Gallery has an extensive, representative collection of Irish painting and is also notable for its Italian Baroque and Dutch masters painting. Entry to the gallery is free.
  • Warm & welcoming. Well worth it on a rainy day. Free entrance. Love the collection of Irish artists' self portraits. Remember to ask for the audio guide.

  • The cafeteria (Clare Street) entrance is a good place to get some reading & writing done
  • The creative corner is a great place to bring kids, the Turner exhibition is currently running till the end of jan
  • A very good selection of books about art! I have never left this shop without a new book;-) Love it!
  • The toilets here are always well kept. This place is useful if you get caught short in the Merrion Square area.

  • Excellent pop up talk today at Melchior de Hondecoeter's Poultry given by passionate member of the gallery's conservation staff who lovingly restored it.
  • You'll find a great collection of french painters from the early 20th century in this newly renovated building. The admission to the permanent exhibition is free.
