McDonald’s Tries Smaller ‘Originals’ Unit

McDonald’s is evoking its origins as a takeout-only burger stand with a new small-size prototye called Originals de McDonald’s, opening soon in Toulouse, France.

The Originals unit will be just 150 square meters (492 square feet), with most of that taken up by kitchen, McDonald’s franchisee Michel Réglat told publication Côté Toulouse. There will be limited seating with primary emphasis on takeout sales. The down-sized restaurant is intended for city-center, shopping centers, gas stations, railway stations or airports, Réglat said.

A pared-down menu will have core items such as Big Macs, Happy Meals and sundaes. But Réglat said he also plans to have a few items, such as a triple cheeseburger, not currently menued at his 19 full-size McDonald’s. Targeting time-pressed consumers, the unit will be open until 2 a.m.

McDonald’s Toulouse tweeted a mockup of the Originals concept, shown below.
