Madrid Museum Honors Hubert De Givenchy With First Retrospective
Madrid's Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum opened a new exhibit last month paying tribute to French fashion designer Hubert de Givenchy. This is the first major retrospective on Givenchy worldwide, but for the Spanish art museum, it is their first foray into the world of fashion. Personally curated by the 87-year-old designer, the collection will feature roughly 100 of his pieces ranging the span of his 50-year career which saw him dressing women from Hollywood starlets to First Ladies. The designs on display are currently on loan from other museums around the world and borrowed from private collectors.
"Given my age, I hesitated. But I have great affection for Spain. I did not have the right to turn down such an extraordinary offer," Givenchy said at the presentation's opening. The retrospective will focus on the couture pieces of his namesake line and include designs from Audrey Hepburn's films such as How to Steal a Million and the iconic black sheath dress from Breakfast at Tiffany's. "Audrey was an exceptional being. She was really the person who was closest to me," he said of the late actress. "Elegance, generosity, beauty and immense talent".
The exhibition will be open from October 22 to January 25, 2015.
