Juicy News In The World Of Pie

With the Fourth of July coming up this weekend, it's no wonder that pie, an all-American classic, is making headlines this week.

• Wagering a Pie: Governors of the two states whose schools are in the College World Series this year have made a friendly bet on which team will win the championship — University of South Carolina vs. University of South Florida. South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley is wagering a full barbeque dinner from Hudson's Smokehouse in Lexington, S.C., while Florida Governor Rick Scott is wagering a key lime pie from Kermit's Key West Key Lime Shoppe.

• Introducing Pieku: In anticipation of an upcoming feature on pie Food & Wine's Editor-in-chief Dana Cowin asked readers to submit their own versions of a new literary concept they've developed called Pieku. Followers of F & W are submitting their pie-inspired haikus via Twitter.

• Community Supported Pies on the Rise: A number of high-end bakeries nationwide are applying the popular Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) model to selling pies. With a weekly or monthly subscription to spots like Three Babes Bakeshop in San Francisco, Scratch Bakery in Durham, N.C., or Michele's Pies in Norwalk, Conn., locals can have their pie and feel good about eating it too.
