BEST FOOD TRUCKS 2012: #56

Some say that the American Dream is dead; others try their hand at pursuing it. So it was with Mutsuo "Jay" Hamada, a Silicon Valley IT guy who according to SF Weekly, after being laid off in 2008, sold his house, and moved to Japan for six months to apprentice "in Kanagawa Prefecture with a young ramen chef called Roku to learn the intricacies of tonkotsu." Believing ramen to be impractical for a food truck, Hamada settled on something else he’d learned a little about, Japanese curry. With a consistent JapaCurry following and a brick-and-mortar izakaya restaurant having opened last month, Hamada's gamble on selling his house seems to be paying off. — Arthur Bovino, 11/13/2012

Foursquare Tips

  • Spicy pork katsu curry with 2 sausages = happiness!
  • The chicken and the pork katsu curry is the best in town, and the new curry pan is great!
  • stick with the curries! not the sandwich.
  • Avoid the line. Get a bento box.
  • One of my favorite Japanese currys - check website to see where they are (usually 1st x Howard or 2nd x Mission)
  • Beef bento box is WAY too salty. On the other hand, the curry sandwich was delicious!
  • The katsu chicken/pork curry is so delicious!
  • The pre-made bentos are yummy, and you can skip the line!
  • Their "spicy" isn't particularly spicy.
  • Check the truck's twitter account for locations; some are less busy than others
  • Get the chicken Kathy curry
  • The curry sandwich isn't bad at all especially if you love curry pans.
  • Use the OrderAhead app or website to have it ready upon arrival. Otherwise, the order and pickup lines can get crazy, like 30 minutes.
  • It's now cash only!
  • Chicken Katsu Curry
  • Bentos go fast; email a day ahead of time to reserve one for the next day's lunch.
  • You can skip the long line if you just want bento & pay cash @ pickup window.
  • order bento and skip the line
  • Eat Katsu Curry. Best in SF?
  • It's not on the menu, and they might not make it, but the potato croquette with a little curry sauce on top instead of Tonkatsu is PHENOM!!!
