Imperial Bottle Shop & Taproom hosts Heart of Darkness Imperial Stout Fest on Saturday February 21st. One could argue this is the fest Imperial was born to host, and the first that really takes advantage of the cellar the Imperial crew has been building since opening. It also may be Portland’s first and only event dedicated to only imperial stouts.
You are probably familiar with the backstory on this style, perhaps the most popular category among beer geeks. But just in case, Imperial Bottleshop & Taproom has put together a brief history:
The story behind imperial stouts dates back to the 1800s, when London exported extremely heavy stouts to the Russian empire, which loved the viscous, highly-alcoholic brews perfect for cold weather. Fast-forward two hundred years, and the Imperial Stout has become one of the most coveted beer styles of the burgeoning American craft beer scene. Brewers are brewing up stouts with massive grain bills and carefully aging them in choice bourbon barrels, and the very best imperials stouts are hunted like white whales and traded like vintage baseball cards by beer geeks across the country.
To honor the deepest, darkest beers around, Imperial Bottle Shop & Taproom has collected an amazing lineup of the most sought after imperial stouts brewed in Oregon, including cellared (Gigantic’s Most Premium), barrel-aged (Deschutes Abyss), award-winning (Chetco’s Block & Tackle), and special small batch stouts made especially for the event.
For $15, attendees will get a commemorative glass snifter and five drinks tickets, each good for a 4 oz pour. Additional drink tickets will be offered for $2 each. Information on tickets and the full draft lineup is available on Imperial’s website, imperialbottleshop.com.
