13 Reasons Halloween Is Better Than Christmas

Halloween is now the second highest grossing holiday in America, following closely behind Christmas. This means that its status as a popular, widely celebrated day is well and truly set, and there's no way of denying its crazy popularity. However, despite the commercial success of Halloween, there's something about it that is so much more laid-back, and therefore enjoyable, than the stressful Christmas festivities.

Halloween Candy

For the sweet-toothed among us, Halloween has to be one of the best days of the year. There's no other holiday that actively encourages you to consume quite as much  candy.

Before Winter

Christmas arrives in the darkest days of winter, when everybody is beginning to feel depressed and annoyed by the cold, the lack of sunshine, and the miserable weather. In contrast, Halloween takes place in peak fall season, when it's generally still beautiful out.

Community Interaction

At Christmas everyone spends time with their family and closest friends, but on Halloween, whole communities come together to party, trick-or-treat, and spook each other to celebrate this scary day.

Crazy Costumes

You may get dressed up in smart clothes for Christmas, but that's nowhere near as fun as the creative, wacky costumes you can wear to celebrate Halloween. Every year brings with it another excuse for a new outfit, which is to be worn on this day, and this day only.

Creative, Spooky Decorations

Though we do love decorating our home with Christmas treeswreaths, fairy lights, and baubles, we have to admit that the spooky, scary Halloween decorations we get to cover our home with are so much more fun and inventive.

Dress Up Pets

Halloween is the one time of the year where it's vaguely socially acceptable to dress up your pets in the silliest outfits you can find.

Gift-Free

We do love receiving gifts at Christmas, but we have to admit that the gift-giving process is really stressful. The lack of gifts at Halloween helps to make this holiday a much happier, more relaxed, stress-free affair.

Halloween Movies

Christmas movies are great: They're heart-warming, fun, and reassuring. But they're always the same, and they definitely don't come close to the amazing thrill, scare, and shock we get when we binge-watch all our favorite Halloween horror movies.

Holiday for Everybody

No matter your religion, class, or age, Halloween is a holiday everybody can partake in and enjoy. There isn't anything stopping everyone from joining in the spooky fun.

Jack O’ Lanterns

Decorating Christmas trees is fun, but it's nowhere near as enjoyable or creative as carving pumpkins. And though there's normally only one Christmas tree to decorate, there's a never-ending stream of pumpkins to carve and friends and family to carve them with.

No Songs

When the Christmas songs start playing in late November, we groan and grit our as these tunes incessantly follow us around for the next month. Halloween doesn't have these irritatingly haunting songs associated with it, giving it a few extra points over Christmas.

Stress-Free

There is so much stress and pressure around Christmas Day being totally perfect. You spend weeks before carefully decorating your home, buying and wrapping all the gifts, and planning the classic meal, which you then have to spend the day itself stressing about. Halloween involves none of this pressure and, therefore, none of the stress.

Voluntary Participation

If you're from a family that celebrates Christmas, avoiding this holiday is basically impossible. Whether you want to or not, you are going to have to take part in these traditional holiday celebrations every single year. However, Halloween is the kind of holiday that you only have to partake in if you want to, making it a more relaxed, enjoyable, and fun day all around.
