8 Fast Food Secrets That Will Make You Never Want to Eat That Stuff Again

It's no secret that America thrives on fast food. In fact, nearly 100 billion dollars are spent on fast food every year. Whether it be a quick lunch to compliment a fast-paced lifestyle or a cheap option for feeding a family of five, there's a reason why we have close to 50,000 fast food chains across the United States. Some fast food chains use harmful chemicals, processing, or added sugar to give the meal its recognizable taste. Knowing exactly how fast food companies operate is just as important as focusing on your portion size and calorie intake at theses popular restaurants.

Breakfast Sandwiches Are Made with an “Egg Blend”

A breakfast sandwich may be the perfect option to pair with your morning coffee but the eggs in your bacon, egg, and cheese may not be made with just eggs. David DiSalvo, a contributor at Forbes, found that the eggs used in popular fast food chains are really a mixture of eggs and a blend that includes glycerin, dimethylpolysiloxane, and calcium silicate. These are chemicals that are found in things such as shaving cream and Silly Puddy. You're better off making your own breakfast sandwich.

Chicken Nuggets Do a Lot of Waiting Around

At McDonald's, McNuggets sit in a warming tray all day, waiting for someone to order them. They're supposed to be thrown away after a set amount of time, but usually, according to some former employees at least, the timer is just reset.

McDonald’s Fries Do Not Age

It's a shame when you buy too many groceries and some of your food is no longer consumable based on the expiration date. A scary thought is that McDonald's fries do not have an expiration date because after four years of keeping McDonald's fries, experiments found that the fries look the same. KFC fries, however, grew mold and looked nothing like the original.

Milkshakes Are Not Created Equal

Wendy's is famous for their chocolate Frosty, which clocks in at 330 calories, eight grams of fat, and 150 milligrams of sodium for 12 ounces. You would think it would be reasonable to splurge on the Triple Thick Shake at McDonald's, which is also 12 ounces. Think again. This milkshake clocks in at 530 calories, 13 grams of fat, and 330 milligrams of sodium.

Reheat So You Can Eat

When fast food restaurants do not advertise "fresh" or "made daily," they are probably telling the truth, or avoiding to tell the lie. Reheating food is easy with all of the high-heat lamps, microwaves, and stove tops in the restaurant. That way nothing goes to waste, right? Restaurants can rollover meals day to day, which could mean your meal is days old.

Those Grill Marks Aren’t Real

Unfortunately, most fast food chains don't have a grill with open flames, so they are unable to get those signature perfect grill marks that everyone likes on the patties and grilled chicken. The marks are usually added before they even get to the restaurant. Oh, and they are typically just artificial coloring

Those Salads Aren’t Exactly Healthy

Think that salad topped with cheese, ranch dressing, and fried chicken is healthier for you than a burger? Guess again. Some salads contain more than 700 calories!

Wendy’s Chili Meat Is Repurposed Burger

It would admittedly be a bit of a waste to throw out all the hamburgers that sit on the grill too long to serve to customers, so at Wendy's they're placed inside a bin in the refrigerator, then repurposed by being boiled, chopped up, and put into the chili. It may sound odd, but it's actually pretty smart.
