Growing the Local Food Economy of Denver as a Community
From foodtank.com, by Clare Algozin

Grow Local Colorado is dedicated to building a strong local food economy in Denver, CO through both grassroots and policy-changing efforts. Through their programs, Grow Local Colorado is helping to create a network of local growers who share produce and knowledge throughout the community. They have also partnered with the Denver Sustainable Food Policy Council to help develop a more sustainable food system in Colorado.

Food Tank had the opportunity to speak with Dana Miller, Co-Director of Grow Local Colorado.

Food Tank (FT): How do you contribute to creating a better food system?

Dana Miller (DM): Grow Local Colorado promotes local food, local economy and local community. These three concepts form the foundation of the work we do. We support groups and individuals working in the sustainable food world by hosting seasonal “Growing our Urban AgriCULTURE” networking potlucks, partnering with organizations in microgrant programs to help budding entrepreneurs involved with healthy food access to get up and running, work with the community to provide “barnraising” type events to organizations that need volunteer help, as well as many other activities.

FT: What is a project, program, or result you are most proud of?

DM: Since 2009 we have partnered with Denver Parks and Recreation, the Colorado Governor's Mansion and local non-profits to grow food to donate to local communities in need. Since 2009 we have grown over 15,000 pounds of food and donated to over 15 organizations.

FT: What are your goals for 2015 and beyond?

DM: We want to continue to grow food and donate, and encourage others to do the same.

FT: In one sentence, what is the most important thing eaters and consumers can do today to support a more sustainable food system?

DM: Grow some food – eat it, donate it, sell it.

FT: How can individuals become more involved in your organization?

DM: Visit our website for ways to become involved in Grow Local Colorado.
