DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - FlightCar is expanding its peer-to-peer car-sharing service to Dallas Love Field.
It promises to offer free drop offs, no parking fees and extra cash to people flying out of the airport. It offers up to $20 a day for customers who loan their cars to other customers while they’re out of town.
CBS 11 News spoke to one person at Love Field who said he rents out his Austin home when he’s away and likes the same concept with his car.
“It’s rented out to people all the time and I’ve never had a hiccup so as long as it’s a ‘break it you buy it type of deal’ I don’t have a problem with it,” said Cooper Clifton.
But before people decide to use FlightCar, they might want to consider the caveat in using the service.
Some people aren’t as willing as Clifton to rent out their cars, even if it means skipping the $17 a day is costs to park your car at the airport.
“I don’t trust my family driving my car let alone a perfect stranger,” said Martha Smith.
FlightCar provide $1,000,000 insurance protection on each vehicle but in the fine print its policy also notes that any “claims must be filed with the personal auto insurance providers of both parties.”
Thus the question remains, is the cost-effective alternative for some travelers a wise choice?
Attempts by CBS 11 News to contact a FlightCar representative, which lists the Ramada Inn on Regal Row in Dallas as its business address were unsuccessful.
The hotel lobby clerk said a representative is working out of a room there. The clerk said FlightCar plans to park its customer’s cars in the hotel’s unsecured lot along I-35 where there are warning signs about possible break-ins.
