Portland, Oregon’s non-profit brewery Ex Novo Brewing Co. has hired a new Head Brewer -Jason Barbee replacing original brewer Ian Greene after just 5 months since opening. Jason Barbee comes with a wealth of experience from Deschutes Brewery’s Portland Pub and was the creator of one of my favorite beers of 2014 – Peach Slap a sour peach beer with Juniper berries and Habanero syrup that was made for the Portland Fruit Beer Festival.
Jason has been a brewer at Portland’s Deschutes pub since 2009. Jason was responsible for brewing the majority of the beer that the Portland brewery produced, including beers from Deschutes’ core lineup, seasonal releases, and R&D trials for the Bend facility. He has a degree in Biochemistry, Biophysics, and Molecular Biology which will certainly help maintain Ex Novo’s standards in quality control and help launch their sour beer program.
Jason will be the leader of the brewing team, and will be critical in Ex Novo’s future as it grows its presence in Portland and is considering options for growth and distribution. He is a native Portlander with a young family and has a wonderful personality that will be a great fit for Ex Novo. “I am so excited to bring Jason on as our Head Brewer. One can easily tell in conversations with him that he is incredibly bright and a talented brewer, as well as being personable and professional on every level. This is a huge hire for us, and I can’t wait for Jason to bring his talent and creativity to Ex Novo.” – Joel Gregory, Founder and President.
Finally if your wondering about their original brewer Ian Greene I hear that he is returning to Boneyard Brewing where he brewed before heading to Germany and then to Ex Novo.
