You Won’t Believe What McDonald’s Sells for Breakfast Around the World

With the rollout a couple years ago of McDonald's All-Day Breakfast, the chain's breakfast menu has never been more popular. And if you've spent any amount of time perusing it, you can probably name most of its offerings off the top of your head: various McMuffins, biscuits, and McGriddles; variations on hotcakes platters; a sausage burrito; oatmeal; and, of course, hash browns. But visit McDonald's locations around the world (should you be compelled to) and you'll notice that the menu (and the breakfast menu in particular) includes some really interesting items that are unique to each country.

China: Bacon Dough Stick Egg Pancake

In Chinese McDonald's, you can start your day with a scallion pancake (cong you bing) wrapped around a fried dough stick (youtiao), with a slice of bacon, scrambled eggs, and hoisin-style sauce added for good measure.

Canada: BLT Bagel

In Canada, you can get bacon, lettuce, tomato, and "a creamy sauce" on your bagel for breakfast.

Turkey: Breakfast Platter

The Breakfast Platter in Turkey looks a little bit healthier than the "Big Breakfast" offered in America: This one contains scrambled eggs, an English muffin, butter and jam, cucumber, cherry tomatoes, feta cheese cubes, and brined olives.

Italy: Brioche

Italian McDonalds offer "brioches" (which actually look more like croissants), either plain or filled with chocolate, cream, or jam.

China: Chicken Cereal Congee

Congee, or porridge, is a popular breakfast dish in China, and McDonald's finally added congee to the menu a couple years ago. The congee itself is made from rice, barley, oats, and red kidney beans; and it's topped with eggs, vegetables, pulled chicken, and seasonings.

Canada: Feta Tomato More-Ning Wrap

Canadians can also start their day with a tortilla wrapped around scrambled eggs, feta cheese, lettuce, tomato, and mayo.

New Zealand: Georgie Pie Bacon ‘N’ Egg

Kiwis have a variety of breakfast options that should make Americans jealous. There's the NYC Benedict Bagel, which contains bacon, egg, cheese, and hollandaise; a McMuffin that has bacon on it; the Massive McMuffin, which has bacon, egg, cheese, and two sausage patties; and perhaps most intriguing of all, a "Georgie Pie" Bacon 'N' Egg, which is filled with scrambled eggs and chunks of bacon (Georgie Pie was a fast food brand that made square savory pies and was bought by McDonald's in the 1990s).

United Arab Emirates: Halloumi Muffin

McDonald's breakfast options in the United Arab Emirates include an English muffin with shredded lettuce, tomato, olive paste, and a slice of grilled halloumi cheese, making for a tasty-sounding halal treat.

Spain: Iberian Temptation

Spanish McDonald's are offering a very European way to start the day: sliced prosciutto and tomato, drizzled with olive oil, and served on a crunchy roll.

Mexico: McMolletes

"Mollete" is the Mexican word for an open-faced sandwich, and at Mexican McDonald's they're topped with refried beans, cheese, and pico de gallo and served with Mexican sauce.

Hong Kong: Sausage and Egg Twisty Pasta

A play on breakfast ramen, Hong Kong McDonald's offer a bowl of either chicken or pork broth filled with noodles and diced vegetables and topped with a sausage patty and a fried egg.

Australia: Brekkie Rolls

Introduced last year in Australia, the Tomato Relish Brekkie Roll contains a fried egg, two strips of bacon, baby spinach, tomato, and a tomato onion relish. A second Brekkie Roll, the Smokey BBQ Roll, contains a fried egg, bacon, Australian Cheddar cheese, tomato, grilled onions, and barbecue sauce.

India: Veg Supreme McMuffin

This vegetarian McMuffin contains tomatoes, onions, mint mayonnaise, and a baked patty made with spinach and corn.
