Inside The Production Kitchen Of Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams (Slideshow)

Jeni's uses locally distilled whiskey from Middle West Spirits in the Whiskey & Pecans ice cream flavor. In the new Middle West Whiskey Eggnog flavor, they use their Michelone Reserve Bourbon.

Labeling Pints

Jeni's is known for their hand-labeled pints. While it requires a lot of time and effort (and a lot of sore hands), it adds the personal touch that Jeni's is so well known for. The labelers rotate, so every day there are different people writing flavors on pints. But if your penmanship isn't up to snuff, you're exempt.

Aligning the Marshmallows

Three people work around the marshmallow station. Two are aligning marshmallows evenly on baking pans, while one takes a blowtorch to the cubes.

Toasted Marshmallows

These beautifully golden mallows will be put into sweet potato ice cream for the Sweet Potato with Torched Marshmallows flavor, available seasonally.

Pumpkin and Chocolate

The fresh, local pumpkin goes into making the Cinderella Pumpkin flavor and the chocolate is blended for the Dark Chocolate pint, a rich, decadent ice cream available year-round.

Brambleberry Crisp

The brambleberries and crisps are stirred into the ice cream manually, and spooned into pints by hand.

Finishing Touches

A U-shaped table is in the same room as the gelato machines where the ice cream is made, and that is where the ice cream is in its final stages.

Final Inspection

After the ice cream is put into a pint, it gets checked for a final inspection and boxed for shipping.

Shipping

Jeni's ships their pints nationwide, to homes and grocery stores across the country.
