Illinois unemployment rate hit 16.4% in April, a 44-year high, as coronavirus-related job losses multiplied

Illinois’ unemployment rate rose to 16.4% in April, up from 4.2% in March, due to the COVID-19 health crisis, according to the state’s Department of Employment Security. The state’s April unemployment rate was the highest recorded since the government began collecting data using current methodologies in 1976.
