Ingredient Hunter: Distillery Bottlings 2012

Limited-edition bottles to try at your next distillery tour

The Jim Beam Ameriacn Stillhouse decanter is available at the distillery.

We’ll go out of our way to get our hands on a good bottle of liquor, especially if that involves taking a trip to a distillery. As we reported last year, a number of brands offer special spirits exclusively at their visitor centers. Here are a few more worth traveling for.

JIM BEAM STILLHOUSE DECANTER ($200) & AMERICAN STILLHOUSE LIMITED-EDITION BOURBON ($30): For the first time in 20 years, Jim Beam is selling its bourbon in a decanter. Just 1,000 were produced, and they’re in the shape of the brand’s new stillhouse that will open to the public this Thursday. And if you make it to Kentucky, you should buy a bottle of the 7-year-old American Stillhouse Limited-Edition Bourbon (pictured above), which is also only available at the facility and is autographed by Fred Noe, the seventh-generation Beam family distiller.

GLENKINCHIE DISTILLERY ONLY SINGLE MALT SCOTCH WHISKY (£80): If you’re going to be in Edinburgh, Scotland, have a dram at one of the country’s remaining Lowland Scotch distilleries. And be sure to pick up the Glenkinchie Distillery Only bottling. It was aged twice, first in an American bourbon barrel and then in another that held amontillado sherry.

TUTHILLTOWN SPIRITS CASSIS ($24, 375 ML): Acclaimed Upstate New York craft distillery Tuthilltown not only makes a range of whiskies but also a small amount of cassis from locally grown blackcurrants in the fall. The delicious concoction is then rested in, of course, whiskey barrels. The liqueur will for sale at its gift shop later this month.

BOWMORE MALTMEN’S SELECTION SINGLE MALT SCOTCH WHISKY (£100): Your reward for getting to the remote Scottish island Islay is this rare single malt from Bowmore. It was created from five sherry casks filled with 13-year-old whisky and is a potent 109.2-proof.
