You haven’t seen a cake until you’ve seen one as a set of Converse shoes. Or a Chipotle burrito. Or a foosball table. Or… well, you get the point.
Pastry artists such as Duff Goldman and Buddy Valastro (featured in this gallery), to name two, have really upped the dessert ante over the last five years, cooking up dream cakes to great fanfare, serious recognition, and inspired imitation.
Thanks to reality shows such as Ace of Cakes, TLC's Cake Boss, and many other cooking competitions on TV, the custom cake revolution is in full effect. And both high-end bakeries and your regular mom-and-pop shops are complying with the trend, answering the public’s demand for greatness.
But no matter how much fondant you can muster up, or how much frosting you can mix together, few cakes can top these top sculpted masterpieces from across the U.S. (and even Canada). These six show just how far a cake can go.
For tips on how to cook your very own masterpiece, check out the YP interview with the "Cake Boss" himself, Buddy Valastro.
