Turmeric N Spice

Simi Jois prepares the delicious creations for her blog at her home in Chicago, Illinois.

This week, we’re proud to feature Simi Jois of Turmeric N Spice in the Blogger Spotlight. For those new to the column, every Friday, we highlight a member of The Daily Meal’s Culinary Content Network, a select group of bloggers who write about food and drink.

We look to these talented food writers for inspiration and participation in The Daily Meal, whether for restaurant recommendations or new recipes to try out for dinner. Our editorial team covers All Things Food and Drink, and we tap the CCN to keep up to speed on what is happening around the country and the world — from fine dining to home cooking.

In addition to blogging and creating at Turmeric N Spice, Simi Jois loves photography. When she first started her blog, taking food photos was like learning a new language, but she got the hang of it. She now calls her artwork “Culinary Optics” which is her mutual love affair of food and photography.

The Daily Meal: What is the mission of your blog?

Simi Jois: Cooking is not rocket science. My mission is to showcase simple easy recipes that can be put together in no time. Food is not just a meal. It brings family and friends together — nothing connects us like food does. As I look back, my fondest memories, have been around people and food (thanks to my mother, who is an amazing cook).

How did you get started with your blog?

It started as a way to document recipes. It has now become my creative journey.

What are the foods you can’t live without?

Rotis (Indian flat bread) and Indian curry.

What are some foods you can’t stand?

Octopus.

What are your proudest posts?

Sweet Potatoes Baked in Coconut Curry.

What is your biggest blog blunder?

I just can’t edit the html code of my blog, I almost destroyed my blog...phew, that was a scary moment.

What was your most memorable comment from a reader?

I have been fortunate to get a lot of love from my readers and friends who are regular on my blog. One reader told me that reading my blog and looking at the images gives her hope and peace as she battles through some health issues.

What’s on your cooking playlist?

Right now, holiday music.

What are some food blogs you love?

http://www.tarteletteblog.com

Food apps you love?

I really don’t use food apps, I prefer blogs and books.

What is the best thing about blogging?

I have met some amazing people through blogging, learned a lot. Trying new recipes, improving my photography, hopefully learn to work on my blog code.

What is the worst thing about blogging?

If you don’t have a schedule, you can spend a lot of time on social media - unproductive time.

What recipe are you currently obsessed with?

Soups and desserts.

What would even your most loyal followers be surprised to learn about you?

I am very open but I am very bad with directions. I can lose my way even with Google maps — true story.
