13 Best Towns For Trick-Or-Treating

Everyone who celebrates Halloween has memories of traipsing around the neighborhood in a silly costume, begging for candy. You knew which houses gave the best candy, and which ones would chase you off their porch.

But what made trick-or-treating a magical experience was the excitement that was palpable throughout the neighborhood, generated not just by all those costumed kids roaming the neighborhood in high spirits but by locals who took the time and trouble to decorate their homes in Halloween fashion and civic institutions that staged appropriate events around the occasion.  

 

#13 Saline, Michigan

In the town of Saline, Michigan, the natural autumn backdrop, a tapestry of beautiful fall leaves, evokes the season so vividly folks scarcely need to decorate their homes for Halloween. Trick-or-treating hours here are between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., but the fun doesn't stop there! On November 1, they stage the 11th annual "Great Pumpkin Roll" where families can race their old pumpkins against their neighbor's jack-o-lanterns down the hill! This family free event also includes hot cider and doughnuts the keep the whole family in delicious spirits! 

#12 Walnut, California

This small California city knows how to make Halloween a "spooktacular" time. On Halloween night, in addition to trick-or-treating, families can get lost in the in the Haunted Maze for a screaming good time. There is also a "Mostly Ghostly" event for families looking to party and show off their costumes for a chance to win the local costume contest. The fun even continues the next day with "After Halloween Lot Party" for food, fun, and music.

 

#11 Brandon, Mississippi

In the city of Brandon, Halloween fun starts early with their "Trunk or Treat" event. The Saturday evening before Halloween, the Brandon Police Department hosts an event in which people go trick-or-treating from car to car, each trunk filled with candy and prizes. There are also games, face painting, a hay ride, and moon bounce!

#10 Rogers, Minnesota

In Rogers, Minnesota, it is hard not to get into the Halloween spirit. Why? There are hundreds of kids swarming this small, making it a really fun night for the whole family! Rogers, Minnesota is surrounded by several other smaller neighborhoods that reportedly all have enthusiastic Halloween decorators. This little town also is a 45 minute drive from the Mall of America, which hosts a fabulous indoor trick-or-treat spectacular (a fabulous incelemnt weather plan!) 

#9 Brandon, South Dakota

Amidst the fall foliage, leaf peepers can truly get into the Halloween spirit in this South Dakota town. After running around the neighborhood of Brandon, South Dakota, kids can head over to the area's seven acres of puzzling corn mazes that are open even on Halloween night for an extra spooky maze!

#8 Boulder City, Nevada

All aboard! If you're looking for Halloween fun on the run, Boulder City, Nevada (just 20 minutes from Las Vegas) has a Halloween party that will keep you on track, literally. The weekend before Halloween, kids can board the Southern Nevada Railway for a Halloween party on the go. The train is decorated, and costumed kids can ride for free! As for Halloween night, feel safe trick-or-treating with the family in the quaint town with fun decorations lining the streets. 

#7 Signal Mountain, Tennessee

Families in Signal Mountain take in the fall beauty and Halloween fun all October long! There is an annual neighborhood Halloween party, and a fun ghost hunt community members can attend. And local Halloween decorator legend Jay Casavant sets up an elaborate Halloween display for Halloween enthusiasts to gawk at every year on their trick-or-treat route. 

#6 Bella Vista, Arkansas

Families with small children love living in Bella Vista come Halloween time. Every year at the public library, kids can gather for a fun "Halloween Spooktacular" full of games, prizes, and of course, trick-or-treating! 

#5 Cedarburg, Wisconsin

Folks in Cedarburg take trick-or-treating to a whole new level. Community members take the pumpkins for a stroll to the city's main street and line them up along Washington Ave for a spooky lighted Pumpkin Walk in costume on Halloween night. 

#4 Littleton, Massachusetts

In Littleton, Massachusetts trick-or-treaters kick off the season with a costume swap to help parents save money and to get kids super excited for Halloween night. Later in the month, Littleton hosts a Halloween parade that several hundred trick-or-treaters and their parents participate in for a night of scares, fun, and food! 

#3 New Boston, New Hampshire

Little trick-or-treaters in New Boston can kick off their Halloween festivities at the community Halloween Party and costume parade. Following that, kids can get excited for a magical night with the help of a performing magician! Plus, for $3 kids can fill up on a small dinner so they don't overdo it on their candy romp around the neighborhood. 

#2 Canton, Connecticut

For 20 years, the Halloween parade in Collinsville has kicked off from the Canton "Hysterical" Museum's porch. The parade features fun and hauntingly inspiring dance performances, while the community attends in costume! The spirit is still alive on Halloween night with fun decorations and an actively participating neighborhood. 

#1 Cornwall, New York

With all the family fun happening in Cornwall, it isn't hard to see why this is our top trick-or-treating town. Not only is there a desperately frightening local legend about Thaddeus Corn, a notorious smuggler, there is a haunted house erected annually to scare trick-or-treaters brave enough to enter.
