11 Foods That Should Be Banned From Public Transit

Please Don't Be that Guy

Even keeping in mind that life moves fast and people with it, there are still some unwritten rules about eating while commuting that every transit rider should follow.

Tuna Fish Sandwiches

Tuna smells, the end. There is no debate about it. But if you combine it with mayo, celery, and perhaps onions, you will smell, too. Bad. And if it's particularly warm out? Please. Leave the tuna at home.

Ice Cream Cones

On a hot day, eating an ice cream cone on a stuffy bus might seem like a great idea. Until it starts to melt. And dribble. And drip. That good idea quickly turns into a bad idea.

Anything Requiring Silverware

A train car or bus seat is a cramped space to occupy. Picture busting out the knife and fork to cut a piece of chicken. Elbows flying everywhere, space invaded. Stay considerate and choose finger foods or smaller bites.

Incredibly Crunchy Foods

It's common courtesy to maintain some level of quiet on public transit. Everyone always rolls his or her eyes at that person who is talking loudly on the phone, but you'll deserve the eye-rolling, too, if people have to listen to you constantly crunching on something like a really crisp apple or a crunchy kettle-cooked chip.

Hard-Boiled Eggs

You know that smell, the one that pops up every Easter. Hard-boiled eggs are a double whammy, since they smell so sulfurous and can also be messy. Don't be that person.

Bananas, Oranges, or Any Fruit with a Peel

Choosing fruits without a peel is more a matter of cleanliness than anything. If you eat a banana or an orange, the peel has to go somewhere. And that could be the floor. Instead, stick with something that can be eaten whole, like seedless grapes.

Hot Soup

Picture riding the bus while sitting next to someone who has a big container of hot soup. You'll spend every waking second of that trip watching and praying that the bus hits no bumps. Avoid hot items, especially liquid. Other than coffee with a lid, of course. No one wants to be on the bus or train in the morning with a group of people who are forbidden from drinking coffee.

Giant, Loaded Burritos

Loaded burritos are tasty, sure. But they are also probably one of the messiest foods, with all the filling falling out everywhere. You are better off saving these for home consumption.

Anything Alcoholic

Alcoholic drinks are a triple whammy. First, many cities forbid alcoholic beverages on public transportation. Second, alcohol can have a strong smell. And third, people who drink can become loud, obnoxious, and unruly. Save the drinking for the bar.

Chinese Food

If you are noshing on Chinese (especially any garlicky dish) while on a train, you are simply annoying. And chopsticks count as silverware. There's not enough elbow room to maneuver them, so skip them all together.

Anything Smothered in Sauce

Saucy foods are a mess. And chances are if you are eating them, you'll have to lick your fingers. Things will inevitably become messy and gross and unsanitary. Just don't.
