Chefs At Home: Jenn Louis And David Welch's Portland House (Slideshow)

Wasco, the black cat, sits by the window, as Orange Cat climbs over Louis' lap (but studiously avoids her coffee).

The Kitchen

Louis' elevated kitchen allows some for separation from the dining areas, with a little window to the backyard's greenery. "[The kitchen] was built out when we moved in, brand-new," Louis said in an email. "There was a stove there, but we chose to return it and purchase what we have now: Thermador."

The Kitchen Nook

The kitchen nook leads into the main dining room, decorated with two paintings from an unknown artist. The couple stumbled across the paintings at a restaurant showcasing the works. "It was a series from a bird-watching magazine the artist painted from... We chose the two we liked a lot and brought them home," Louis said.

Kitchen Décor

Louis bought a calendar from the San Francisco airport many years ago and liked the prints so much, she framed them and placed them onto the walls when they moved in. The cheeseboard in the center is from Schoolhouse Electric & Supply Co. in Portland.

Cookbooks

You'll find cookbooks almost everywhere in the house, but two whole shelves are stacked with cookbooks in the study upstairs. "David does not cook, just me," Louis said. "I inherited a bunch of my mom's old ones when she passed away, and I always buy colleague's books when they come out, I always want to support them. I love lots of books: I love most everything Phaedon publishes, Canal, and the new Michaud book is awesome."

The Study

Louis and Welch share one large desk in their study. The china plates in the back? Also a gift from Louis' mother, who collected antiques. "My mom collected flow blue and was an antique appraiser. She gave these to me when we moved in the house — and the antique rack," Louis said.

Dates Poster

Louis framed this poster she found at an art fair in the California desert, where her father lives. "I grew up in the desert and this is a very old-school photo of what rarely exists now," she said.

The Bedroom

Framed on the wall: The targets from Louis' first time at the shooting range for her birthday last year. Yes, there is a bull's-eye.

Ducks in the Bathroom

"I like to joke that I am happy my ducks are in a row. People who know me well laugh because I like to be organized," Louis said.

The Attic

"We like to joke this is the teenager's dream room," Louis said. And while the two rarely spend time in the attic, they do house a "graveyard" of old CD's from Welch's days in college radio.

The Entrance

A little window nook by the entrance is perfect for reading, or just putting on shoes. The coat rack by the door is from Design Within Reach, while the large candles are gifts from Louis' mom.

The Garden Outside

"The vegetable garden is David's," Louis told us. "He grows beans and greens and herbs. I can request anything I want. Most food is just for us, but I bring some herbs to work." When The Daily Meal visited, tomatoes still hung heavy on the vine.

Bonus Cat

Orange Cat, it turns out, is a fan of the head butt.
