Burgers’ Lenten Hibernation is Over

Put away those noxious cod sandwiches, burgers and bacon and fun are back. It started with the red-bun Angriest Whopper at Burger King, the Buttery Steak Burger and Steakzilla! at Checkers/Rally’s and the return of the Jalapeňo Fresco Spicy Chicken at Wendy’s, all of which were reported here yesterday. Add in Carl’s Jr./Hardee’s Midnight Moonshine Burger, too.

And now, before the funky-bun bandwagon can head out of town, Red Robin is jumping on. On April 4 it introduces a Red Ramen Burger, a beef burger on a ramen bun (which it claims to be the first casual-dining chain to feature). Toppings include teriyaki and Chiu Chow (chili oil) aïoli, plus chili-infused shredded cabbage, carrot and onion, and a basil garnish.

The menu price ranges from $11.49 to $12.99, depending on region, but wherever you are, Red Robin will be offering the burger on April 19 to the first 22 college students (ID required) for just 22¢, which it says is the average price for dorm-food darling ramen. Everyone else showing up on 4/19 gets at least a $2.22 price break.

“We closely follow emerging trends, and when the ramen burger first debuted, our culinary team worked to develop Red Robin’s take on the foodie favorite, enabling us to be the first to offer it nationally,” Jonathan Muhtar, Red Robin SVP-CMO, said in a release announcing the burger. “At Red Robin, we strive to constantly provide our guests with unique experiences and menu items that they can’t get anywhere else in the casual dining industry.”

There’s a burger—a Honey Jalapeño Bacon Sriracha Burger–at the heart of Denny’s spring menu promotion, which it calls “Red, White and Bacon.”

All the items on the promo menu come with the option of hickory-smoked bacon, turkey bacon or (for 99¢ for a two-slice upgrade) a new honey jalapeňo bacon. Denny’s also has a new brioche burger bun that it’s using for the Honey Jalapeňo Sriracha Burger. That build is a sriracha-seasoned beef patty topped with Cheddar, two strips of honey jalapeño bacon and creamy Sriracha sauce, with fries on the side.

The “Red, White and Bacon” menu’s other offerings—all available all day—are the Red, White & Blue Slam; Honey Jalapeňo Bacon Slam; Triple Bacon Sampler; Loaded Bacon, Steak & Potato Skillet; and Bacon Cheddar Tots. Maple Bacon Sundae is back on the menu.

Also re-emerging is the Colby Jack Pub Burger on Culver’s menu. Last seen as an IPO in 2014, the build is a single or double beef patty with Wisconsin Colby Jack cheese, crispy onion strings and four-peppercorn mayo with a touch of A.1. Sauce on a buttered Supper Club Bun.
