Let’s start then with a show of hands by those who have served or eaten these burger toppings: bourbon-bacon jam, wasabi-ginger aïoli or a hot-sauce-dipped Louisiana hot link. I see hands, which isn’t surprising because the July Burger of the Month specials are pretty restrained, at least by burger-chef standards.
It’s July, so a lot of red-white-and-blue burger ideas are here, including, literally, a Red, White & Blue Burger from Burger Boss in Elmwood Park, Ill. (red onion, blue cheese, a white bun and more). There’s also a Firecracker Burger from Georgie Porgie’s in Oak Creek, Wis. (with pepper-Jack cheese and jalapeňo mayo).
Also in tune with the Fourth are The All-American at Bucket List Burgers in Riverside, Calif., and Kooper’s All-American Double Cheeseburger at Kooper’s Tavern in and around Baltimore. Never one to be outdone, Slater’s 50/50 in Southern California brings back the ‘Merica Burger and its salute to bacon (its signature 50/50 bacon/beef patty, bacon American cheese, BBQ spiced bacon, Frank’s Red Hot Sauce-dipped Louisiana hot link, sriracha bacon slaw, bacon baked beans, bread & butter pickles, onion strings, honey mustard on Texas toast grilled in bacon fat).
So aside from the kangaroo-beef blend burger at London’s BOBO Social, the burgers are fairly sane. Even the usually out-there Kuma’s locations aren’t crazy. Kuma’s Too in Chicago is featuring a Weekend Nachos burger this month (a 10-oz. beef patty with Merkts Cheddar, jalapeño, pico de gallo, pickled red onion, tortilla strips and cilantro).
