Burger King tomorrow unveils the Angriest Whopper burger, distinguished by a bright red bun. The LTO burger is topped with thick-cut bacon, American cheese, iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, crispy onion petals, jalapeños, mayo and spicy Angry Sauce.
The Angriest Whopper is priced at $5.49 alone or $7.49 in a drink/side combo.
Like the black-bun A.1. Halloween Whopper offered here last fall, the red-bun burger is a gimmick previously tried in Burger King’s Japan stores last summer. The Japanese red-bun AKA Samurai burger, however, took the concept to the limit with red cheese, colored, like the bun, with tomato powder. Burger King says the Angriest Whopper bun gets its color from baked-in hot sauce.
The AKA Samurai was released in tandem with a black-bun (and black cheese) Kuro Shogun burger and black-bun Kuro Taisho chicken sandwich. Charcoal was the darkening agent.
Several chains have given colored buns a try, most recently KFC in Australia with a Zinger Black sandwich. Wendy’s in New Zealand offered a Kiwi Classic burger on a black bun and McDonald’s tried both black and white buns in China.
Turnabout being fair play, Burger King Japan right now is featuring a very Western-influenced BBQ Bacon Whopper.
A few weeks ago, I suggested that butter was becoming a hot burger topping. This was after Burger King has launched its Extra Long Buttery Cheeseburger and several other concepts had begun using flavored butters as toppings.
And now come the Checkers/Rally’s sibling concepts with a Buttery Steak Burger. The sell is that the beef patty is “flavored on the grill with savory steak butter” before it’s topped with Philly steak Swiss cheese and crispy onions and served on a brioche bun. It’s a deal at $1.99.
Also new on the Checkers/Rally’s menu is the Steakzilla! burger. The build is beef, melted Swiss and shaved steak, topped with another beef patty, more cheese and shaved steak plus crispy onions and mayo on a toasted kaiser roll.
Finally, as GrubGrade reported first, Wendy’s is bringing back the Jalapeno Fresco Spicy Chicken Sandwich and its sidekick, Jalapeno Ghost Pepper Fries. Both items were on Wendy’s menu a year ago (April 2015).
