BK Aids Literacy; Red Robin’s New Brew

FXISG-GRUKP WVIPPSK. That’s what a menu board may as well say for the 20% of the world’s population that can’t read. In observance of World Literacy Month and to raise awareness, The Burger King McLamore Foundation (named for chain founder James McLamore) has created a campaign to show how crippling illiteracy can be.

For a video, Burger King changed the drive-thru menu boards at one location to gibberish for one day. The film (which can be viewed here) captures the frustrations of diners unable to make sense of the menu.

The campaign also includes Facebook an Instagram posts in foreign languages. Viewers can use a translation tool on Facebook that  yields messaging about literacy and education. The McLamore Foundation works globally with non-profits’ initiatives dedicated to improving literacy.

Red Robin Gourmet Burgers and Brews and New Belgium Brewing have collaborated on a limited-time, limited-availability brew. Grilled Pineapple Golden Ale debuts at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver, to be held October 6-8.

The hook is that the beer is inspired by Red Robin’s Banzai Burger, which consists of a grilled beef patty glazed in teriyaki and topped with grilled pineapple, Cheddar, lettuce, tomatoes and mayo on a sesame-seed bun.

For Grilled Pineapple Golden Ale—5.5% alcohol by volume—New Belgium used ginger, brown sugar and black malt to bring soy and umami notes, followed by pineapple chunks and a touch of applewood-smoked malt.

The Golden Ale/Banzai Burger pairing will be discussed by Red Robin and New Belgium during a special session at the festival’s Beer & Food Pavilion on October 8. After the event, Grilled Pineapple Golden Ale will be poured only at Red Robin locations in Colorado and only while supplies last.

Lots of restaurants are doing riffs on the election with Hillary vs. Donald menu items. I like Good Stuff Eatery’s version. The chain– with locations in the Washington, D.C., area as well as Chicago and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia–is offering a burger in honor of each candidate.

The Hillary is topped with Muenster cheese, arugula, habanero caramelized onion and balsamic ketchup. The Trump gets Swiss cheese, champagne mushrooms, onion straws and lemon truffle mayo.
