Ay Ay Picante, a charming BYOB Peruvian restaurant in Chicago’s Albany Park neighborhood, brings a true taste of Peru to Chicago. The expansive menu is loaded with a combination of traditional Peruvian classics as well as creations of the Peruvian-born chef and owners Dan Jaime Bardales and Doña Chamuca Bardales.

Dishes worth seeking out include the tamal Peruano (a Peruvian tamale filled with chicken, nuts, and olives), parihuela (fishermsn’s stew), fried tilapia, lomo saltado (sautéed beef), arroz con pollo (chicken and rice), beef or chicken stew, arroz chaufa con camarones (fried rice with shrimp), and cau cau de mariscos (seafood casserole with potatoes and peas).

If you’re dining at a Peruvian restaurant, you won’t want to miss out on the ceviche (fresh, raw seafood cured in citrus juice) and tiradito (similar to ceviche but with sliced fish), and that’s also true at Ay Ay Picante. For the ceviche, chunks of tilapia, jumbo shrimp, or both are marinated in lime juice and Peruvian rocoto chilies and served with sweet potato, onions, and Peruvian corn. For tiradito, the tilapia is cut into slices that resemble Japanese sashimi and marinated in citrus, Peruvian chilies, and spices.
