The 8 Most Outrageous Margaritas

The weather outside may feel more subzero than tropical, but that doesn't mean we can't all kick back with a tequila treat this National Margarita Day, coming up Friday, Feb. 22. But while many (including our editorial director Colman Andrews) believe that the only margarita you should be drinking is made with orange liqueur, tequila, and fresh lime juice, margaritas just keep getting weirder and weirder. We've rounded up some of the most outrageous takes on the traditional margarita — they may very well inspire you to make your own wacky versions this weekend.

1. The World's Largest Margarita

If you'd like to get your whole neighborhood — neigh, your whole small town population — drunk off tequila, may we recommend this 10,500-gallon cocktail? This summer, Nick Nicora, co-owner of Ovations Food Services, set out to make this enormous margarita to claim the world record for the world's largest margarita. What made it into the award-winning margarita? A whopping 4,650 bottles (or 2,100 gallons) of Jose Cuervo Gold tequila, 8,400 gallons of margarita mix, 50 gallons of lime mix, and 20 gallons of Cointreau, according to a release. So in short that made 134,000 Calarita Margaritas. Yeah, we can't really recommend that you make that many margaritas this weekend — at least leave it to the professionals.

2. The Siri-Made Margarita

Because your iPhone wasn't already capable of enough, some hackers figured out a way for Siri to mix up some margaritas. Let's just say our outrageous phone bills are not doing enough for us if our phones are not making us margs.

3, The Bud Light Lime-a-Rita (and the soon-to-be Straw-Ber-Rita)

The whole world's gone crazy for the Lime-a-Rita, the margarita in a (Bud Light) can. And now, Anheuser-Busch recently announced a strawberry companion for the Lime-a-Rita, a malt beverage with strawberry flavoring. (We promise, not all prepackaged margaritas are bad.)

4. The Margarita-Flavored Soap for Men

We know you want to lick the salt off the rim of a margarita, but really guys, don't use this as a ploy to get girls to believe you're that third margarita they ordered.

5. The Aviary's Margarita

Made with spicy ice cubes? Well, that's one way to spice up your ordinary margarita.

6. Margarita Cupcakes

Prohibition Bakery's take on a boozy treat? We can't say no to that.

7. Winter Margaritas

Really, not that crazy — as the Dallas Observer points out, it's just made with winter spices (like cloves), bitters, and a mezcal (as opposed to a light, summery silver or reposado tequila). Try this holiday special of a margarita, the Gingerbread margarita.

The infamous margarita that went almost as soon as it came.
