Given my recent time in Rio de Janeiro I've become eager to see more of South America. Other than Brazil and Argentina, the entire continent is still a mystery to me. While speaking with fellow expats about my South American curiosity, one country was always suggested.
"You've got to get to Colombia!"
Citing the beautiful country, dynamic cities, and picturesque beaches, Columbia quickly rose higher on my priority list, especially after all the friendly and fun Colombians I encountered during the World Cup. And the Colombian city I'm coveting most isn't Medellín or the capital city of Bogotá. Instead, it's Cartagena.
On the northern coast of Columbia, Cartagena sits on the shores of the Caribbean Sea. I'm intrigued by this former Colonial city, which seems to be a delightful mix of history, culture, beaches, nightlife, and restaurants. Exploring the city's walled Old Town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a must, followed by an afternoon {or two} of lounging on the white sand beaches of Isla Barú, and snorkeling in the crystal-clear water. With coconut in hand, I'll wonder why it took me so long to get to Colombia. Muy bien!
