Vedge: Philadelphia's Vegan Destination

Being a vegan in a city rich with authentic cuisine can prove to be quite challenging, particularly when dining out. Whether we realize it or not, most restaurant fare contains some sort of dairy products and avoiding these ingredients is very difficult. But over on Locust Street in Philadelphia, Vedge redefines vegan food.

Opened in fall 2011, this chic side street venue is a must-go for Philadelphians and out-of-towners alike. Husband and wife team Richard Landau and Kate Jacoby are the chefs and owners of Vedge who have boldly established their restaurant as a top-rated spot not only in the city but also in the country. In fact, Philadelphia Magazine has written "Is Vedge the best vegan restaurant in America? It might be one of the best restaurants, period."

The menu includes all sorts of unusual and mouth-watering dishes like wood-grilled sweet potato pâté and portabello mushroom carpaccio with creamy horseradish and pickled cabbage. There's also, a changing "Dirt Menu," which includes freshly -picked vegetables from a local garden. The impressive dessert menu boasts vegan-friendly treats like cheesecake with Meyer lemon marmalade and sticky toffee pudding with pumpkin ice cream.

Landau and Jacoby have mastered the art of vegan cooking and diners often forget their dishes are without dairy products or meat. All flavors are rich and decadent while maintaining a wonderful sense of lightness that blends to create incomparable plates. These factors make for a truly fantastic Vedge experience.
