9 Best Greasy Foods Across America

While greasy food is definitely not the healthiest choice, proponents of "everything in moderation" would agree that trying a deep-dish pizza or a chicken-fried steak here and there can't hurt. Here, then, is a list of nine states and a great greasy dish each is known for. Consider picking one up on your next visit — or watch a friend devour one while making a tut-tut sound.

Buffalo Wings (New York)

Invented at Anchor Bar in Buffalo, Buffalo wings are a source of state pride. They're best fried in peanut oil and served with hot sauce and blue cheese dressing.

Chicago-Style Deep-Dish Pizza (Illinois)

Deep-dish pizzas pack a lot more punch than regular slices – they're usually about an inch and a half thick and covered with mozzarella cheese, which seems to melt into the dough. Other common toppings include pepperoni, onions, black olives, and sausage. A slice of deep-dish pizza with just pepperoni topping can be 360 calories or more a slice, whereas a regular pepperoni slice is about 298.

Chicken-Fried Steak (Wyoming)

Wyoming considers chicken-fried steak the state's favorite/signature food according to a Cooking Channel survey. It's just a boneless rib-eye or some other cut of steak breaded as if it were fried chicken, then fried up crisp and served beneath a hearty helping of cream gravy.

Cuban Sandwich (Florida)

Despite its name, this sandwich reportedly hails from Florida and was invented by the Cuban community there. It's a beloved spin on a ham and cheese sandwich, incorporating ham, pork, Swiss cheese, mustard, and pickles, all on Cuban bread

Fried Butter Balls (Georgia)

Paula Deen dreamed this recipe up – made with cream cheese, flour, and of course, butter, the morsels are fried until they're a light golden color.

Green Chile Cheeseburger (New Mexico)

Green chile cheeseburgers are a New Mexican staple. Atop a burger and between two buns lie a helping of melted cheese and chile pepper relish – sometimes made with serrano, Hatch, and poblano chiles.

Loco Moco (Hawaii)

Loco moco is Hawaiian comfort food consisting of white rice topped with a hamburger patty and an egg fried sunny side up, with all of it smothered in gravy. It was reportedly invented for a group of teenagers around 1949 in Hilo.

Philly Cheesesteak (Pennsylvania)

This famous Philadelphia sandwich consists of thin slices of "frizzled" steak and melted American cheese (or even Cheez Whiz) contained in a hoagie roll. Sautéed onions and bell peppers are also often included.

Texas Nachos (Texas)

Texas nachos are fried tortillas traditionally topped with Longhorn cheese, pickled jalapeños, and salt to taste. Some add refried beans and sour cream to give the dish extra flair.
