Similar to caramel in appearance, the beloved South American confection dulce de leche differs in ingredients: traditional recipes include milk.

Although the sweet sauce can now be found worldwide, it is believed to have originated in Argentina during the mid-19th century.

As the story goes, its development was actually an accident that was caused when a "serving woman" was distracted from a dish that she was preparing for soldiers during war. She had originally intended to create "la lechada" for the camp, but when she returned to her pan, she discovered a "dark brown jelly substance" and dulce de leche (at least similar to what we now know) came to be.
