The beautiful town of Leh has been greatly influenced by Buddhism and thus has religious importance. Maximum population of Leh today is Buddhist. There are various ancient Tibetan Buddhist monasteries in Leh along with mosques and the Leh Palace which are worth a visit. The monasteries are special attraction because they have been largely conserved following their religious importance.
The Thikse monastery is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery of the Yellow Hat Sect. It is located on the top of a hill in the Indus valley. It was built as a fort monastery in the Central Tibetan pattern. There is a statue of the Tibetan protective deity at the lower entrance of the monastery. There are many articles of Buddhist art like the stupas, statues, thangkas, wall paintings and swords. The highest level of the monastery has a Stupa. The Thikse monastery is also known as 'Mini Potala' as it resembles the Potala Palace of Lhasa. It is the largest monastery in central Ladakh.
