Apple season is here, and picking your own apples is a great way to spend some quality time with the family this fall. Apples are incredibly versatile, with many ways to use them after you take them home. Enjoy your apples as a fresh and healthy snack, use them in baked goods like apple pie or cake or make homemade applesauce. You can even add a touch of nature to your fall décor by displaying them in creative ways. We brought you a list of the best places for apple picking in the Philadelphia area last fall, but here's an updated list with even more ideas.

A trip to this 300-acre farm is guaranteed fun for the entire family. Spend the day going on a hayride through the orchards, riding ponies, visiting the animals in the barnyard, checking out the passenger train, getting lost in a corn maze or even fishing in Orchard Lake. Pick-your-own apples runs from early August through the end of November from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, weather and crop selection permitting. There is a $5-per-person minimum charge that goes toward your apple purchase. Visit the weekend of September 27 and 28 for the Apple Festival hosted by Makin' Music. This two-day event features live music, games, contests, apple tasting demonstrations, an apple pie eating contest and more.

Shady Brook Farm was founded by T. Herman Fleming in 1913, making it one of the oldest working farms in the country. Now run by the fourth generation of the Fleming family, the farm celebrated its 100th year in the summer of 2013. Offering events such as Summer Wine Concerts, Fall Fest, Santa Landing, the Holiday Light Show and Easter Eggstravaganza, Shady Brook Farm has become a staple for seasonal family traditions. Apple picking is available August through the beginning of October, from 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday. To get the most out of your visit, come during Apple Fun Days on Saturday, September 13 and Sunday, September 14 as well as Saturday, September 20 and Sunday, September 21. In addition to wagon rides through the orchard to pick your own apples, there will also be activities like an inflatable moon bounce, crafts, food vendors and more. Apples are $1.29 per pound for pick-your-own.

Solebury Orchards began in scenic Bucks County in 1985 with 24 acres of land. In 1989, the orchard opened to the public, eventually adding another 45 acres in 1996. The apple picking season runs September 4 through November 2, with picking hours Thursday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. There are a lot of varieties of apples available, with some of the most popular being the Honey Crisp, Empire, Stayman Winesap, Keepsake, Gold Rush, Pink Lady and Pinata. Since they ripen at various times throughout the fall season, you'll want to check with the orchard if you have a specific favorite. On weekends, you can take a tractor or wagon through the orchard to the trees that are prime for picking that day. Apples are priced at $1.25 per pound, and that's the only cost for picking. After visiting the orchard, you'll want to stop by the market for fresh-pressed apple cider, cider ice (frozen cider slush), cider donuts and homemade applesauce.
