Summer Eats: Grilled Octopus {Pulpo} Tacos Recipe

The summer has brought on a sea of grilled seafood {pun totally intended} for us. I’m always  inspired to cook what we have at restaurants or even on cooking shows. I love having an amazing meal out and then going home to recreate it.

Cooking at the Lara house is a family affair, which is fun {+ messy!}.  My kids are adventurous eaters. They’ll try just about anything and I strongly feel it’s because we expose them to different types of food.  The food experience doesn’t just happen when we sit together at the table, Jaiden and Sienna help plan and prepare meals. My theory is if they help cook something they’ll be more willing to try it. Trying something new is half the battle – I love seeing them smile when they’re pleasantly surprised at how delicious it is.

It was during some TV time recently that we caught an espisode of Guy Fierie’s Diner Drive Ins and Dives, it’s one of Jaiden’s favorite shows. Guy visited Asi & Asado in Cabo San Lucas and tried their Grilled Pulpo {Octopus} Tacos. Jaiden was intrigued and wanted to try it. So a few days later at the market we found some fresh Octopus and prepared them.

 GRILLED OCTOPUS {PULPO} TACOS RECIPE

I honestly thought after seeing this large blob-like creature with tentacles be thrown into a boiling pot Sienna would be squeamish but she was all in and loved it.  This recipe requires a little bit of extra time, you need to boil the pulpo for 30 minutes but it’s totally worth it. The kids now love Octopus … who knew?!

We had tons of leftovers and made a pulpo salad the next day just added some more lime and orange juice and tons more cilantro with a side of grilled garlic bread … beyond delish!

These grilled octopus tacos will be a hit at your next cookout so get our of your comfort zone and grill some up soon!

  1. Octopus
  2. 1 orange
  3. 1 red onion
  4. 3-4 bay leaves
  5. Salt + Pepper {well seasoned, to taste}
  6. 1/2 cup of olive oil
  7. 1/4 cup of cilantro {for garnish}
  8. pico de gallo
  9. flour tortillas

Instructions

  1. In a large deep pot bring water to a boil with all the ingredients {except the cilantro and pico de gallo}, once the water is boiling add the pulpo. Keep the flame on medium and let it boil for 30 minutes.
  2. While that is boiling prep your grill and wooden skewers by submerging them in water to prevent them burning wile on the grill. Once the pulpo is cooled down cut it up into about 1 – 2 inch sizes. Keep the size consistent so they grill evenly. Skewer the pulpo and brush with a little bit of olive oil. Grill them on direct heat for just a minute or two per side. If you’re using a charcoal grill the flavor will be even more intense!
  3. Grill the flour tortillas and serve with some fresh pico de gallo and a few lime wedges!
