Speedboat Bar & Grill

Last week, some co-workers and I went out to celebrate a promotion. I have always heard that Speedboat Bar & Grill had good food so I was excited when I heard we were meeting up here. Located on Jefferson Ave, in Wyandotte, MI, Speedboat is a small little dive bar. We love dive bars, right? See how they ranked.

Atmosphere: 3 out of 4 bites (patio action)

Price: 4 out of 5 bites

Quality/Taste: 3 out of 5 bites

Service: 1 out of 5 bites

Wow Factor: 1 out of 5 bites (menu variety)

If you know me, you know that I enjoy a good Reuben.

Reuben Sandwich with fries: Thinly sliced corned beef joined with sauerkraut and topped with Russian dressing served on toasted white bread. The corned beef was a tad dry, but overall this sandwich was good. The corned beef was slightly salty and included not one piece of fat (which could’ve  been why it was dry).  There was a good sauerkraut to beef ratio and the bread was lightly toasted and not soggy. I didn’t care for the Russian dressing. It was OK, but lacked tang and seemed like it came out of an off brand bottle with too much ketchup. The fries were good-cooked well done for that extra crisp.

Service started out good. The place wasn’t too busy for a Thursday night and our food came up quick. Drinks and food were reasonably priced and the food was good for a dive bar. The problems started when we went to cash out our tabs and were told we couldn’t have separate checks (we had a party of about 10-15). Ok, no problem. I have worked in the restaurant industry so I know this game. Typically, establishments are still able to run your credit card for the amount of your tab. Nope, we were told that we could pay cash or either divide up the whole tab into 4 credit card payments. This was a major inconvenience because most of us had credit cards or not even cash to cover our whole tab. Our two servers were rude about this, didn’t even apologize for the inconvenience, and even refused to separate the checks (I overheard one of them talking to the other). The weird part was that some of our co-workers who left earlier, were able to get their checks separated and cash out. We ended up having to figure it out on our own and one of our co-workers paid the whole tab while some of us had to pay her back later. The servers didn’t tell us that we couldn’t pay with multiple cards when the reservation was booked or when we first got there. This whole thing was unnecessary and as a result, most of us will never return.

Regardless, Congrats, Kellie. I still had a great time! I wish you the best of luck and I know you will rock your new position!
