a Restaurant Guide 2012 Restaurant of the Year runner-up, Smallwares offers dishes with Asian inspriation and other extremely exotic flavors. Owner and chef Johanna Ware told Willamette Week, "It’s Asian, but I like it better than trying to be authentic." With dishes like fried kale with candied bacon, fish sauce, and mint, and oxtail curry with scotch bonnet, plantain chips, and coconut, it scares away some customers, but Ware isn't giving up in her desire to bring exotic food to Portland.

  • Surprised this place isn't crazy busy. The menu is incredible.
  • Chef Johanna Ware brings a NY sensibility to her NE spot Smallwares. She even manages to put a spin on the ever-ubiquitous kale by deep-frying it and serving with a minty fish sauce. [Eater Member 38]
  • The fried kale and candied bacon is amazing. They also made the tastiest and most tender octopus I've ever had!
  • Corn, kale and cod! Yum!
  • Great small plates! Kale, corn soup, ma po dofu are amazing and must tries. Almost everything was a taste explosion. Well executed and inspired!
  • Oysters and kimchi
  • Portions are small yet tasty. I had a strawberry slushy/alcoholic beverage with himalayan sea salt and cobb salad. It was good and nice outdoor seating for a late brunch.
  • Thai iced coffee with black cardamom at brunch - not too sweet and nicely spicy
  • Joanna Wares Asian Small Plates Spot is not to miss. We love the Spring Green Pancake, Chawan Mushi, and Spicy Noodles!
  • Hakushika Kuromatsu, order a carton or two.
  • Get the scallops and the lamb omg
  • Fried six-minute egg. BOOM
  • The ox tail is good but hard to eat. Beware the scotch bonnet pure. It turns you into a little bitch.
  • Try the Scotch pudding. Not butterscotch. Real Scotch!
  • chicken lollipops & oxtail curry!
  • The bloody Mary is too watery and chili tasting- not enough tomato base.
  • Awesome raw fish, oysters and tasty drinks
  • Great wine list. They carry a lot of wines you won't find most places.
