Singapore's Prestigious Fullerton Bay Hotel Offers Unicorn Fur Robes & a Modern High Tea

I love Singapore. This tiny island city-state is something of an enigma with its lack of obvious natural resources or sheer land-mass, yet it has fashioned itself as a powerhouse economy of Asia and continues to grow from strength to visionary-strength. It is no surprise that the luxury hotel scene in Singapore is strong. The Forbes five-star Fullerton Bay Hotel is a perfect reflection on where Singapore has positioned itself right now. Its cutting-edge, dignified lavishness is perfectly balanced against a reflection on the heritage of its unique waterfront location. In Singapore, right now, this is the place to stay.

The property speaks volumes about modern-day Singapore; built with a purpose to embody all that is modern and refined, yet deferent to its history. There is a rare talent to balancing opulence with restraint; it's called class, and The Fullerton Bay Hotel nails it.

We recently called the hotel home for a few days before heading back to Australia after a few weeks of photographing adventure travel in Southeast Asia. Our only regret was not spending more time at this simply stunning place. Perhaps it was the unabashed elegance, incredible attention to detail, or the genuine effort to ensure that every moment of our stay was perfect. Or perhaps it was because we swapped the jungle-elephant trek and river speedboats for a cocktail on the Singapore waterfront? In any case, from the moment we landed at Singapore's Changi airport, the property cared for us like royalty.

The Fullerton Bay is a new hotel, designed by renowned architect André Fu, of Singapore's own DP Architects. The property is relatively small at only 100 rooms and suites. Perhaps that is why the staff can remember all the guests' names and the little nuances of their preferences that elevate the experience beyond a standard luxury hotel.

Staying at the Fullerton Bay means a level of service that rises above the expected five-star experience that the city does so well. A limo was waiting at the airport for us and from there, first-class service took over. The design of the hotel is unique; it is built completely over the water of Marina Bay. In fact, the meeting rooms float within the hotel and actually move vertically with the tide. The main halls and lobby are designed in a way that pays deference to the nautical heritage of this location. We were struck by the subtle luxury from the moment we walked in. The hotel is modern and polished, yet completely inviting and hospitable. It takes but a minute to feel like you are home.

The attention to detail even gets down to the bespoke scent that whispers gently across the salty air upon arriving at the hotel. A custom blend of White Jasmine, Ylang Ylang, Lily Red Rose, Neroli and Sheer Musk all speak quietly to your subconscious. The treat for the senses continues with internationally-commissioned works of art perfectly placed throughout the hotel.

We checked into our room which lived up to our now very high expectations. The view from our waterfront room was simply fantastic. As a travel photographer I pride myself on doing whatever is necessary to get the shot. That means hauling gear through sweaty-discomfort to a worthy location and patiently waiting in the elements for the right light. Well, that's just not the case here. Our balcony over the water facing the Marina Bay Sands resort and the stunning skyline meant that I was knocking out money shots while ordering room service in a climate-controlled suite. Yes, that was a first.

Also, I don't know what the deal is with their bath robes, but they feel like they are magically made of unicorn fur. Be sure to buy one as they are available for purchase. Literally, the best robe I've ever worn, period.

The architects took full advantage of the location when designing the rooftop pool and famous Lantern bar. Sipping a signature Red Lion cocktail from one of the best rooftop bars in the city is something you just have to do. As the evening sets in, the bar starts to fill with all of the beautiful people and we are reminded of the affluence of this amazing city. Singapore bartenders are becoming world-famous, earning artisan status as this city's thirst for creative mixology continues to fuel the thriving small bar scene. Grab a cocktail, enjoy the sunset and check out the light show that dances across the harbor each evening from this exclusive vantage point.

In addition to Lantern, the property has two other dining establishments. The Landing Point is our recommendation for one of Singapore's best High Tea experiences, a modern adaptation of the country's colonial past. In true Singapore style, fine dining at Clifford restaurant delivers the best of Europe and the best of Asia with the finest ingredients flown in from around the world.

In the short time it has been open, the hotel has been awash with awards and accolades for its stylish design, luxurious hospitality, unsurpassed views and waterfront dining experiences. The Fullerton Bay Hotel should be on every discerning traveler's shortlist of classy-chic stays in Singapore. We very much look forward to returning.
