Sandwich Of The Week: La Maison Du Croque Monsieur

There's never been a classier, more grown-up grilled cheese sandwich than the croque monsieur — a French classic that is salty, smoky, creamy, cheesy, crunchy, and now, a little bit sexy.

At New York City's La Maison du Croque Monsieur, a sandwich café dedicated to croque monsieurs, sandwiches are made with foreign cheeses and artisan bread and named after the former tenant's gentleman callers. The classic croque, called a Mr. Henry, is made with slow-cooked Jambon de Paris, creamy Béchamel sauce, cheese from Murray's Cheese, and thick slices of Amy's Bread, grilled until golden-brown.

The café's sandwiches — each a variation on the classic croque monsieur — are named in honor of the space's former tenant, an erotic novelist from the 1940s named Anaïs Nin, and her many lovers. The classic Mr. Henry is named after her fellow writer Henry Miller. Others like the Mr. Antonin (named for the French playwright and actor Atonin Artaud), which is made with roasted turkey, sage, cranberry sauce, and melted Provolone, and the Mr. Gonzalo (named after her Peruvian lover Gonzalo Moré), filled with banana, Nutella, and mascarpone, stray from the classic croque monsieur with untraditional, even bold, ingredients. And of course, the café's take on the croque madame, made with egg, bacon, and Gruyère, is named Mme Anaïs for the lady herself.
