In the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day and pairing delicious beer with classic Irish fare, this Samuel Adams Irish Red beer-infused Irish Soda Bread is a proverbial pot of gold that perfectly combines both. This recipe comes courtesy of a small business owner in the Samuel Adams Brewing the American Dream* micro-loan program, Sandy Russo of LuLu’s Sweet Shoppe in Boston – one of the most Irish cities in America.

Ingredients
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/3 cup dark brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tablespoon caraway seeds (optional)
  • 1 cup raisins or currants (optional)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup samuel adams irish red
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
Directions
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Let beer stand until flat, about 20-30 minutes. Spray 9-inch cake pan with cooking spray then line bottom of pan with parchment paper.
  3. In a large bowl combine flour, sugar, baking powder, caraway seeds, and salt. Stir in raisins. Stir in beer, milk, butter, and one egg until a dough forms.
  4. On a floured surface, knead dough until smooth. Shape into round loaf. Cut a 1/2-inch deep ‘X’ into the top of the bread.
  5. Lightly beat remaining egg and brush over dough. Bake 55 minutes or until loaf sounds hollow when tapped on bottom.
  6. Remove from pan and cool on rack.
  7. Eat warm for best taste!
