Restaurant Critic Roundup: A Compelling Case To Plug Charlottesville, Virginia, Into Your GPS
As always, the ratings range from stars to bells to beans, but every review offers specialized insight into the food, atmosphere, and service of eateries in each city's dining scene and the critics eating at them.
This week in New York, Pete Wells reviews the Kentucky-named Maysville, where "the service in both rooms is comfortable and, yes, American, with staff — men and women — outfitted in plaid shirts and blue jeans, as if trying out for a remake of The Dukes of Hazzard."
Hakkasan in San Francisco has a diverse menu, with "a smattering of specialties from all over China." The food, however, "is generally fine, but some dishes aren't any better than you would get at a neighborhood dive," explains critic Michael Bauer.
In Washington, D.C., critic Tom Sietsema makes the drive out to Charlottesville, Va., a drive he says, was well worth it. "Liver and oatmeal might not sound like a compelling case for plugging Charlottesville into your GPS, but in the hands of the chef at Glass Haus Kitchen, a beguiling new restaurant in the city's Warehouse District, the combination of foie gras and toasted steel-cut grain is (trust me on this) magic."
