Reckless Drivers Endanger School Children At Bus Stop

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - It's something Ed Rojas sees everyday in fact several times a day. In his North Fort Worth neighborhood he has captured cell phone video showing drivers breaking the law.

"We've had people go around... pop the curb," says Rojas "...actually almost hit us."

Rojas started recording his son's daily trips to the bus. His cell phone video shows the stop arm out and flashing and the bus driver even honking the horn, but driver's are ignoring it.

"My worst fear is my son being hit," says Rojas. "Just being in the path of a moving car scares the heck out of me."

Rojas' son rides a special needs bus. The father not only worries about his 8th grader, but also the other students on the bus. He's even tried to warn drivers.

"We've had people flipping us off and yelling obscenity's to us," he describes another encounter with a woman who went around the bus recently "She just smiles, waves and laughs."

Durham which runs the buses says they've already had three close calls and school just started.

"It's very frustrating especially when we have three close calls within the first 3 weeks of school here," says Richard Lindell with Durham School Services "We had one little girl if she would have been four feet further she would have been smashed by a car."

Hearing that is what makes Rojas nervous.

"I just don't understand how somebody could totally disregard people's safety like that especially parents," says Rojas.

Fort Worth police did come out to the neighborhood a few weeks ago, but no tickets were handed out.

A spokesperson with the department says tickets for breaking this law can cost up to $500.
