Fine, artisanal cocktails with a classic bent are the name of the game at Bar Congress, a modern hot spot in downtown Austin. The rye-based Oracle gets a smoky touch with a hint of mezcal and flamed orange. The cocktail is made by the manager of Bar Congress, Jason Stevens.

Ingredients
  • 1 1/2 ounce sazerac rye
  • 3/4 ounce averna amaro
  • 3/4 ounce cocchi di torino vermouth
  • 1 tablespoon del maguey 'chichicapa' mezcal
  • 1 flamed orange peel, for garnish
  • 1 cherry, for garnish
Directions
  1. Flame orange peel into empty, chilled coupe glass; keep peel. Combine all liquid ingredients, stir to chill. Julep strain into coupe. Garnish with orange peel and cherry.
