The Mustache Cocktail Recipe

I have always loved coming up with new ideas for cocktails and experimenting with recipes. And so naturally after having a few drinks, I tend to get antsy about ordering someone else's creation and want to try one of my own instead. Well, that's exactly what happened one night when I was at a bar with a friend. After drifting around the bar for a few hours, she found me in the crowd and asked what I was drinking. My response? "I don't know, I think a vodka tonic."

"Wow," she said, "that's pretty girly." It was.

Determined to order a much manlier drink, I stormed over to the bar and demanded bourbon. Bourbon is manly. And gin! Gin is also manly. I asked to have some simple syrup and some lemon mixed in (so that I wouldn't be drinking straight gasoline). The result is quite possibly the manliest drink ever, and my favorite drink to date. Be warned though, like the real thing, it's usually best to only have one mustache at a time. Two, and you start to look like a fool.

Ingredients

  • Two parts gin
  • Two parts bourbon, preferably Maker's Mark
  • One part simple syrup
  • Squeeze of lemon
  • Ice

Directions

Combine gin, bourbon, simple syrup, and lemon juice in a shaker with ice. Shake hard and strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice.

Cocktail Shopping Tip

Buy your booze in bulk – transfer what you need into smaller bottles to stock your bar – you’ll save money and have enough leftover for your next party.

Cocktail Cooking Tip

Add another layer of flavor to your cocktails by making your own simple syrup – combine equal parts sugar and water with whatever aromatics you like – fresh herbs, whole spices, citrus, or chile peppers – heat to dissolve sugar and strain before using.
