Oregon City’s Portland Cider Co. is opening a 24 tap Portland Cider House on SE Hawthorne Boulevard. Located centrally on the busy stretch of Hawthorne across the street from the Bagdad Theater and next door to Peets Coffee at 3638 SE Hawthorne. 2015 is looking like a great year for Portland cider lovers with this news and the upcoming 2nd location of original cider taphouse Bushwhacker opening in Northeast Portland.
Jeff Parrish opened Portland Cider Co. in late 2012 in Oregon City and now packages four year-round brands in 22oz bottles and kegs and a business that has been producing about 200 barrels per month with production growing 5-10% each month. They opened their own tasting room in the OC in February of 2014. With ciders continued growth across the country, Portland is known as the largest cider market in the U.S. but still is extremely young with Portland’s first cidery and cider taphouse in Bushwhacker Cider opening in 2010 we now have five cidermakers (six if you count Widmer’s Square Mile brand) in Portland: Bushwhacker, Reverend Nat’s, Cider Riot, the tiny Farmhouse Cider brand and the new Swift Cider. Reverend Nat’s operates a tasting room focusing on their own brands with some guest taps and St. Honoré Boulangerie opened on SE Division this year with 10 cider taps to rival the only other real cider taphouse – Bushwhacker on SE Powell with 9 drafts. This new approach might be inspired by the Schilling Cider House recently opened in Seattle with 32 cider taps not just their own. Seattle also has Capitol Cider a cider taphouse with full restaurant. With that in mind we have some catching up to do
Portland Cider House will easily claim the title of a destination spot with the most ciders on tap in Oregon by easily beating out St. Honoré Boulangerie’s 10 with 24 and only 1/3rd of that 24 spent on their own ciders. While the new Portland Cider House will not house any production it will be able to showcase more of the companies limited edition and experimental ciders. 2/3rds of the taps will be taken up by other terrific ciders from the northwest on a rotating basis. Unlike Bushwhacker who has the additon of hundreds of ciders in bottles, they will sell only draft cider and have no plans for bottle sales at this location. All of the ciders will be displayed on the now nearly standard digital tapboard which will also keep their website updated live via Digital Pour with what is on tap at any given time.
Portland Cider House is scheduled to open March of 2015 in the old “Escential Lotions & Oils” space on Hawthorne with seating for about 50 and a small bar. They plan to have limited food options like personal pizzas but just enough to satisfy the Oregon Liquor Control into letting them allow minors, but an emphasis on bringing in outside food. The taproom will have a rustic farmhouse feel inspired by the cider houses of West England. Vintage cider antiques and local craftsman and artists will lend the decor the atmosphere of an old barn with hand-built tables and lots of reclaimed wood.
