It just goes to show, you don’t have to be a five-star restaurant to get a positive newspaper review. (Photo ModifiedFlickr/Mike Mozart)

The Grand Forks Herald local newspaper made national headlines two years ago when its restaurant reviewer wrote an upbeat and earnest review of the local Olive Garden, calling the restaurant “impressive.” The somewhat-naïve review went viral, and now restaurant reviewer Marilyn Hagerty is back with her latest review of the local Applebee’s. Last year, she also wrote about Ruby Tuesday’s.

So what does Hagerty say about Applebee’s? Well, for starters, she decided to go light with an oriental chicken salad. Although not nearly as glowing as the original Olive Garden review, Hagerty does say that “Applebee’s seems well established as a popular place for casual lunch.”

She is a bit critical over the pricing of her salad, saying, “You can get a half size version for $8.59. The regular size is $9.99, but you don’t need that.” Also, she and her companion ended with the dessert shooters because “we couldn’t pass up sharing one of the small gooey, chocolate desserts on the menu.”

All in all, Applebee’s is described as “just right.”
