McShakes On A Plane: McDonald's Opens On A Vintage Plane

While your local McDonald's sits in the middle of a strip mall parking lot, this newly-opened location in New Zealand sits aboard a vintage decommissioned airplane. The DC-3 plane has stood outside a normal McDonald's location in Taupo, New Zealand for decades and was recently refurbished, golden arches-style. Now customers can eat their McDonald's meals at one of the 20 seats inside the airplane, which can be accessed via an outside staircase on the ground level.

"The plan was, and still is, to keep the appearance of the plane as original as possible," franchise owner Eileen Byrne told The Daily Mail.

This means that unfortunately, the cockpit was not turned into the fryer like we had hoped — the fully-functional regular McDonald's next door still houses all of the cooking action. In fact, the cockpit and its equipment are still relatively intact, allowing guests to get a sneak peek into the inner workings of a vintage plane. And in case you want to brush up on your aircraft lore, the history of the plane, which was used by South Pacific airlines and de-commissioned in 1984, is posted inside the seating area.
